Saying Wavy - MFA Candidate Graduate Exhibition
Charles Eames stated that design is, “…a plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose. The design is an expression of the purpose. It may (if it is good enough) later be judged as art.”
Excerpt from Eames Design; The Work of the Office of Charles and Ray Eames.
From my understanding art has always been viewed in higher regard than design, and this is due mostly to the freedom of expression, exploration, and limitlessness of an artist.
Mathias Augustyniak (M/M Paris) writes, “Art has simply become more and more detached from the economy of everyday life; artists seem to insist on positioning themselves outside of the real world in this exclusive space called art.” What does this mean for designers using their creations as a vehicle for the kinds of personal expression and commentary that are usually seen as art’s preserve? What seems crucial to this investigation is that some sort of slippage occurs between where art is, how it looks, and what it does.

Big THANKS to Drew for posting this!
I bet you’ve been faking it. I bet your Photoshop files are secretly a mess, and your line art layers are squishy and fuzzy.
It’s okay. This stuff can be hard. Here’s the right way to do it.

I was initially drawn to this infographic (Fig 1)because of the muted color palate. The varying degrees of blue is very effective for describing Antarctica without having to know the information being conveyed. Though the images themselves also tell a story without reading the text. Looking deeper into this design which contains a lot of information but the way it is organized there is still space and breathing room, it doesn’t feel crowded.
I also like the color palate of this infographic (Fig 2) because of the opposite reason as the one above. The color contrast is harsh and bright in a pleasing way. The way the information is arranged and is rounded out with a intro is effective. You can read the information in any order and it still makes sense. Though the data here is mostly statistics your not feeling bored or overwhelmed by them which is good. The illustrations are cute too.
